Support Moving Abroad: What to Do When It Feels Hard

You Can Do This on Your Own… But Should You?

You’re strong. You’ve done big things before.
You packed your bags, left behind comfort zones, and landed in a brand new country. You’re living the working abroad dream that most people only talk about. But do you have support while moving abroad?

Once the adrenaline wears off… things shift. That’s where support moving abroad can make all the difference.

Moving Abroad Is Brave – But You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

You’ve already made the leap. But now that you’re on the ground, it’s not all beach views and new cafes. It’s visa stress, loneliness, and figuring out how to build a life from scratch.

That’s where support moving abroad comes in.

Here’s what I hear most often from clients who’ve already relocated:

  • “I feel overwhelmed, even though I thought I had everything planned.”

  • “No one back home understands what I’m going through.”

  • “I thought I’d feel settled by now – but I don’t.”

You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through this.

When I first arrived in Barcelona, I was totally overwhelmed by crowded metro, the massive crowds on the streets, and non-stop traffic. I studied abroad here 10 years ago, and boy has it gotten a lot more crowded now. Despite my loneliness, I pushed myself to go to meetup events consistently. I made lots of international and local friends, but I actually met another girl from the U.S. in my EXACT same situation. Having a local friend and someone I could confide it made all the difference.

I also took a step back, reassessed, and realized that while I wanted to be near a big city, such a big, crowded city just didn’t vibe with me the same way it did in my 20s. So I spent some time in coastal towns all right outside of Barcelona, and took the step to make the move to a  charming, calm town by the sea just a train ride from Barcelona that would give me the best of both worlds.

Little tweaks we can make in our expat lives can really make a WORLD of difference, we just have to figure out what those are and WHO we can confide in that will actually understand what we are going through.

3 Signs You Might Need Support Moving Abroad

Even the most independent working nomads and expats benefit from guidance. If any of these feel familiar, you’re not alone.

1. You’re stuck in the “now what?” phase.

You made the move – but now you’re in limbo. Support moving abroad helps turn that fog into clarity with emotional grounding and perspective.

2. The emotional rollercoaster is real.

From culture shock to homesickness to unexpected anxiety, it’s not just the paperwork that’s hard. The emotional toll of adjusting abroad is very real – and valid.

In fact, InterNations research shows that culture shock, language barriers, and homesickness are among the most common mental health struggles for expats. You’re not alone – and you’re not doing anything wrong.

3. You’re tired of doing it all solo.

You were brave enough to make the move. Now be wise enough to seek connection and guidance. That’s what support moving abroad is all about.

What Real Support Moving Abroad Looks Like

I work with people who’ve already moved abroad – through remote work, digital nomad visas, local job offers, or other pathways – who are now facing the emotional reality of life in a new country. Most aren’t lost – they’re just in the in-between.

With the right support, you can:

  • Navigate culture shock and emotional ups and downs

  • Work through homesickness and feelings of isolation

  • Build a meaningful daily routine and sense of belonging

  • Feel more confident managing uncertainty or “what now?” moments

  • Connect with others who truly understand your journey

Moving abroad is brave. But staying grounded and emotionally well while adjusting? That takes real inner work—and you don’t have to do it alone.
